Kings of Leon - Sex On Fire

Image
We are first introduced to what a black scene with what appears to look like a candle glimmer of light in water then a extreme close up of the lead singer of Kings of Leon, Caleb Followill. Low key lighting has been used to create lots of shadows and dark images with back lighting to create silhouette effects too. An enigma is created here as we firstly introduced to a mysterious setting and not being able to fully see the lead singer. As the music video continues, we are introduced to more mid shots of props such as a bucket of water, leaves on the ground, the other two artists within the bands pulling a surprised face while the video reveals Caleb Followill, using a scared and unaware facial expression, lying on a bed, with gestures as to say why is he here. These actions suggest that he is the main object within the music video which relates to his role as the lead singer and most recognizable. The setting is in a warehouse type place, which connotes enclosure and no freedom. When he is on the table, he starts getting angry and fighting away with his fellow members of the group as they try to hold him down. This could represent anger of a break up with his past girlfriend in which he sings about.

Editing
Straight cuts have been used frequently to switch back and forth from the lead character reacting to something which appears to be his surroundings, all in close ups and mid shots, and to mid shots of water, what we were introduced to at the start and glimmers of light as the music begins to play. The beat at the beginning to the music is a fast paced beat which links to the use of straight cuts to create a tense yet mysterious start to the music video reinforcing the enigma created.

Genre
The indie rock genre has been directly portrayed throughout the whole of this music video. Their costumes for example are grunge like with the use of black t-shirts and jeans, black being a common connotation of rock music. The 'unfinished' look to their hair is a very stereotypical representation of indie rock artists, with their scraggy look to them is seen as iconic.

Connotation
He is wearing a crucifix necklace which symbolizes Christianity and is lying on a bed with his arms spread out beside him which may resemble Jesus on the cross. This also may have connotations embedded in the images of the water, which could connote the 'holy water', suggesting this song has some reference to religion in it. We also see a mid shot of a male looking through what looks like a bible. These links with Christianity could connote sins and religion as powerful as its contradictory to the meaning on the song. In an interview with Caleb Followhill, that its main meaning is about sex. Sex can be seen as a sin before marriage and he was not married with the person he wrote this song about. We also see a close up of a chicken trying to flap its wings, however chickens can't fly. This could connote the leads character within the music video. He is lying on a bed looking around and confused with the other male singers within the music video staring at him and so forth, however he doesn't appear to be moving. The fact the chicken can't fly could connote that the male can't escape from the place he is at.

Target Audience
The target audience is varied here. The song itself is about sex with a female girl, therefore males tend to be more direct about their discussions about sex therefore could attract a male audience as well as a female audience. Females may be attracted to the band and the song by seeing the males perform, due to their appearance and the common view that women admire boy bands. Also those who are interested in the genre of indie rock will be more liable to listen to them.

Mode of Address
Due to the tight space which creates a mood of being trapped and claustrophobia. This effect is particularly enhanced with the low key lighting creating quite a spooky and haunting effect as so far we are unaware of the reason for the behaviour of the lead character. This changes when we see them performing as a band, with the eye contact towards the camera as well creates an intimate and direct relationship between the audience and the band itself, as they are seeing them perform as well as the artistic, performance side to the video.

Narrative
The story behind this video is very muddled with lots of different props and scenes create which are hard to first make an immediate link. The song is generally about his previous sex life therefore representations are used within this to connote the meaning of the song.

Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down

Image
The first line of the song 'So, who's that girl there?' which begins when a mid shot of a female character dressed in a hoodie and there is no glamour involved, and she is staring at the camera and looking down at the audience. This makes the audience feel intimidated by her character, which is reinforced through the setting. Her costume and the block of flats behind her, corresponding with the snowy weather make a dull and unapproachable atmosphere for the beginning of the music video. This scene leads to another scene of her on a flat estate, balcony and smoking. We gather a sense further on that this girl in tracksuit is a prostitute or dealer. She is shown at night approaching men in cars and grabbing their arms on the street. Similarly to the first line about the girl and we are introduced to the female character, in this scene the song says 'and who's that scummy man?' which is when we see a male character, well known action Steven Graham from This Is England who has an reputation to play rough characters within his films, with is arm wrapped around her. This connotes they have some form of relationship and importance throughout the video and they are then shown having a meal together and so forth,  which suggests he is more than a 'quick thing', but he is more of a boyfriend figure in her life, whether she wants him or not, as he is seen being violent with her by carrying her into a car. This connotes him as a forceful man, reinforcing the common ideology of gender being that males are more dominant; patriarchy. Throughout the music video, there are many close ups of the females facial expression, where she looks sad and miserable connoting to the audience that she is not happy with her life and the relationship she has with the male.

Editing
Slow paced straight cuts are used at the acoustic and slow beginning part of the song where the song involves description of the two characters being introduced. This is used so we can focus on the actions of the character in detail, for example the female approaching lots of men and the dinner the girl and the male have together. The audience need to make sense of the relationship being displayed and the pace being slow helps to do this. As the video goes on, there is a pause within the song about 1 minute in which then kicks off a fast paced beat using guitars and drums, in which we see shaking camera movement from within a moving car. The straight cuts used here are fast moving and the scene itself is a blur because of these two elements making you think instead of the song describing these two characters, it will now go on to describe their troubled and crazy relationship. We are introduced to a clown and also the band itself. The clown appears to frustrate the man when he beats him up and the male encourages the female to shout at him and hit him too reinforcing the patriarchy element.

Genre
Themes about relationships are a common stereotype of indie/rock music which is presented through lyrics and the narrative to the video. The theme of patriarchy is continuously seen throughout this music video which is an extremely common convention of the indie rock genre, where males dominate the music, and often the videos.

Connotation
The whole music video is mainly set at night, indoors or in cloudy weather, which are all indicators of gloominess and unhappiness which is reinforced through facial expressions and actions shown, but also dark colours represent the indie/rock genre well too. Also, the female character has her hood up in most of the music video, where she is hiding a bit of her face. This connotes she is hiding from the real world and from her identity. Her 'job' appears to be dodgy and not official, or illegal, which makes it important she hides herself but it also appears to be a sense of insecurity with her facial expression looking worried. We see a clown character who could act as a connotation of humor who is laughing at the female character for being vulnerable and letting this man treat her the way he does.

Target Audience
Arctic Monkeys have a very varied audience, however I believe it is more male dominated. This video is very male dominated with patriarchy being reinforced time after time. Stephen Graham starred in this music video, who is a highly recognized actor in Britain, therefore this may widen their target audience more as people may see it more as short film rather than a music video therefore want to watch it.

Mode of Address
Unhappy and dull atmosphere created through the dark weather and night sky, the dark and rough clothing such as tracksuits and black suit shirts. The pale skin the female character has also suggests she isn't very healthy which connotes the rough and poor living standards she appears to be set in.

Narrative
The narrative appears to be quite twisted with odd appearances within the music video such as a clown. However, what appears to be the focus within the narrative is the relationship between the two main characters (actors Lauren Socha and Stephen Graham) and how their relationship develops with the other drama within their life, however there is no change to the relationship, he continues to be violent and switching from happy to angry.

Jamie T - If You Got The Money

Image
The first thing we notice about this music video is that the whole narrative is in slow motion, when we are first introduced to two females staring blankly at something. This creates an enigma as the audience wonder as to what they are both staring at. By their facial expression we presume it is something bad. Straight after we are introduced to Jamie T, with a close up of his face singing. This is in normal motion in comparison to the slower narrative. This may be because the song is very up beat therefore shouldn't be portrayed as slow. We are then fourthly introduced to another character, a male in what appears to be a dark club, with people around him, dancing in a odd manner. We find out this is what one of the girls was starring at, and so forth, this continues throughout the video; each female sitting down starring at a man dancing. We see close ups off the first males face, and he appears to be drunk due to the wobbly stance and strange facial expression. We learn throughout this video that the females are shocked and amused by the men, which, in contrast to the genres common ideology of males being dominant and almost 'better' than females. We see the females laughing at the men which shows females as respected. We see four different females throughout the music video, staring blankly at a drunk male dancing. This creates a comedy element to the music video which definitely fits in with the up tempo song. The performance side of the music video appears to be set in the same place as the narrative. To have a performance shown of the song within an indie rock music video is very stereotypical of the genre, and is usually set up like a realistic 'gig'. This way we can relate to the artist, the song, as well as the narrative.

Editing
The editing is very well paced for the video. The narrative part of the music video has been set in slow motion completely, which means a very mellow, tone is set to the video which contrasts with the image we see. Within the narrative, because of the slow motion, long takes are used to focus on facial expressions and movement of characters. Therefore, because of this, simple straight cuts are used in between each long take. In comparison to this, with the performance, their is no change to the motion of the video, therefore it is at a normal tempo with shorter takes, making the straight cuts much more obvious to the eye.

Genre
Due to the nature of the video, I feel it automatically doesn't appear to fit the genre as much as the other videos I have analysed. However, this may be because Jamie T does fall more slightly into the indie genre rather than the indie/rock genre which would be my mistake. However, we still see dominant ideologies appear within the music video which we see in many indie rock videos. For example, the performance combined with narrative is something which has become apparent. Also, a lot of the focus is on male characters, despite whether it is positive or negative.

Connotation
The slow motion edit within the narrative of the music video, could connote how the males feeling. As they are drunk, they are hazed with reality therefore everything seems slower. In comparison to this, the performance side of the music video is at a average speed therefore connotes the up tempo style to the song. The fact the females are always sitting down and being danced too could be connoted in several ways. In one hand, the fact the males are standing and the females are sitting connotes dominance upon the males, however, the fact they are dancing off balance, and the females are sitting down, calmly, aware of the situation and stable, connotes they are more grounded and mature in the situation, which in a sense, gives the females the dominance. Towards the end of the music video, we see two of the dancing male characters falling slowly to the fall, one on his own outside on a pavement, and the other is because another man grabs him and brings him down. We see here the peak of their night. The narrative is simply about males going out, drinking a lot and not caring for their partners and so forth. It is symbolic in the sense that the female characters have being laughing at them, mocking them, looking down on them, and they've finally come to the point where their stereotype has been took from then, and they are now the vulnerable, weak, and drunk characters, while the women stand above them looking down on them. One female character even throws her food on the male while he is on the floor which shows a lack of respect towards the male when he is drunk. It really highlights the feud between female and male dominance, whether this was a direct or indirect message is unclear.

Target Audience
The target audience is very varied for this music video but definitely within the teenagers and young adults. Jamie T is a very British 'jack the lad' type artist, therefore teenage males may look up to him for his quirkiness and personality. I do think however, females as well as males would be very interested and like this song and music video due to his appearance and style.

Mode of Address
The music video here provides a very upbeat and playful atmosphere. The song is very fast at some parts and clashes with the slow motion of the video, however the music video cooperates fast dancing with slow editing, which creates a interesting and quite humorous feel.

Narrative
The music video itself along with the song, is about a simple night out for the male gender. It's mainly about how males can go out, considerably more than females, spend loads of money, and don't really care with how the night goes, yet they have no care for real relationships of partners. Jamie T said in a interview that the best relationships can sometimes be the ones where no money is involved, whereas the ones where the boys lavish money on girls can sometimes be a bit clueless. In the video we see how women are turning them down. This connotes how females respond to the reckless type of male on a night out, which is negatively.

The Twang - Barney Rubble

Image
The opening shots of landscapes such as what is commonly used on advertisement posters. We are introduced to an open setting of cliffs, sunshine and birds. We are then introduced to two band members motorcycling down a mountain road. It appears to be a foreign country as they are meeting foreign looking people, for example shaking their hands. We also see what these people activities are for example walking around, swimming, on boats, cycling and driving. We are introduced to the bands journey through a new culture and setting. The performance part is very simple with the lead singing the song in the setting. Lots of long shots are used to capture the setting. We see a 'road trip' type theme to the music video which is a stereotypical view of indie rock bands on the road living the rock and roll lifestyle. The music video is very happy, bright and playful with lots of different characters, all in which have either mid shots of closes to capture the expressions on their face.

Editing
The music video is very quickly paced with lots of straight cuts to capture the movement of the band throughout the area they are in and to connote the idea of them going quickly and 'on the road. Straight cuts are often used in indie rock music videos to keep the simplicity. There are captures throughout the music video of photographs quickly displayed as stills within the music video which are shown one after the other in groups of 2 or 3 and straight cuts are used in between to show them more as a reel so very quickly. Again, this connotes the hectic pace of a bands lifestyle which also links to the theme in the music video of travelling.

Genre
I feel that this music video connotes the genre much less than the previous music videos I have looked at and analysed. There is no fully set up performance, just simply singing' the lyrics within the setting everything else is filmed in. Also, there is no specific narrative. It is simply the band in a new place, meeting new people and doing different things throughout the day and night. Its more like an adventure. The costume the band members are wearing are all dark colours which again connote the genre and make them fit into the genre well, rather than the nature of the music video which doesn't fit in quite so well.

Connotation
Bands tend to make a lot of money within the music industry doing so well and audiences having a strong need for new music means it is easy for bands to become recognized quickly. They have access to more money, more tours, which means travelling. The area they are in in this music video is very foreign and different to Birmingham where they originate from. It could connote the contrast of the settings and how their new exciting life on the road has took them here. The band members are also portrayed as very close throughout the music video with the snapshots of them in the car together, drinking together and meeting the new people together, connotes the stereotypical convention of indie rock bands been good friends as well as a band.

Target Audience
As they are quite young and the song is upbeat, I feel it is focusing at a young adult audience/older teen audience due to the soft and fun nature of the music video. There is less of a serious feel which I have seen in previous music videos and portrays a more welcoming and friendly approach. Due to this, I feel the audience may outstretch from the often very specific indie rock audience, and could attract other people from different audiences. The portrayal of females and males in this music video, doesn't specifically target a gender making it open to females and males to enjoy equally.

Mode of Address
The music video is very fun and energetic which is reinforced through the fast paced straight cuts, the dancing, cliff jumping etc. All these activities create a welcoming tone to the music video which doesn't facilitate one audience. There is large feeling of a friendship and fun here which reinforces the friendship convention of a band and also the life on the road.

Narrative
The music video doesn't have a specific narrative which is strange because we usually see performance combined with narrative. The structure of the music video is actually very simple. The band are seen throughout the video in a new place, but this is also the place where we see performance type scenes; simply singing along in the setting. I feel this is a good effect, although not particular to the genre so far, it varies the video and makes you wonder why they avoided the normal structure we see. Is it relevant to the lyrics/the song or just how they wanted it to be? These questions is what could intrigue the audience as it is a lovely video to watch.

The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony

Image
A fade from black introduces the first shot we see is a mid shot of what appears to be a males feet walking along the high street and a tracking movement is used to follow him. The shot then widens gradually as the music begins to reveal the man as he walks around the corner and stops. The man is the lead singer of The Verve, Richard Ashcroft. The camera keeps tracking backwards so we can see a full size view of him. The setting is a very urban street with people, roadworks and cars in the setting. When the music kicks in properly, he starts walking along the street with the camera leading the way in front. He doesn't stop for anyone throughout the music video and repeatedly barges into people. These people are just average looking people on the street however he is walking with much more power and determination. Occasionally we see mid shots in front of him of people walking towards him, for example the two females which we then flip to see a shot of him barging in between them. He is very blank and doesn't care of his actions at all. This is continuous throughout the music video. He is singing the song throughout the music video.

Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory?

Album Cover - Front

Inside front

Inside back

Back cover

Image
Front cover - Simplistic view of man walking down a city street with another person right in front of him waking towards the camera. Enigma created here as we have no idea who these people are as they don't appear to be any of the recognisable members of Oasis, for example, Noel or Liam Gallagher. The people are positioned in the centre of the frame highlighting that they may have some importance. The street is equally lined in perspective so our main focus is on the characters. The urban feel is a common connotation of indie/rock genre due to inner city social crowds focusing on the genre they prefer.
Inside front - View of man walking down a different street but it's not the same man as before. The man itself appears to be dressed too up to represent the indie/rock lifestyle therefore they have used a contradictory character within their advert to create mystery which could be connotation of what the music will be like. Still in urban surroundings representing the indie rock lifestyle. The fact he is on his own in the middle of the frame gives him importance, power and independence which could be a connotation of what the band is like. This is supported through Oasis's tendency to be independent and outrageous in their actions.
Inside back - The inside back uses the same image which was used on the front cover therefore the same connotations become apparent.
Back cover - Same as inside front cover however more close up. We gather a real sense of independence from this character from him exploring this street alone. The colours are fairly light but there are dull aspects for example the concrete on the ground which could connote the boring lifestyle he leads however the bright colours, for example, the reds on the shops and the blue and white he is wearing connote the happiness in his life which could be represented through the music.

Copy
Front cover - Album title '(What's the Story) Morning Glory?' presented along the top of the album cover in an uppercase font in the colour white. The white connotes peace and purity, which reflects in the image as there is no business shown in the image just a man walking alone. The capitals highlight its importance to the audience however the title itself is unusual and the man could possibly be walking in the morning as the streets are empty apart from one man to reflect on the album title. The recognizable 'Oasis' symbol with white and black is situation in the bottom right corner. It is very noticeable due to it being situated on a black block for its purpose as a symbol. It is a way of identifying the album immediately.
Back cover The back cover contains the track listing over the image of 12 tracks all in a white font. Very easy to read and clear to audience.

Genre
Front cover Calm audience interested in mellow indie rock due to quiet mood we gather from the image however at this point we are uncertain.
Inside front - We see the man in the image alone connoting independence and willingness to explore which is a representation of the genre as indie rock has a strong impact on the music industry despite, and also it tends to explore into different types of music such as pop, electric, techno, soul and so forth which may suggest what this particular Oasis album may do.
Back cover - In independance and depth of this character is highlight again with the repetition of a previous image used, therefore trying to reinforce it greatly to the audience. The album songs could relate to a journey which would be reinforced through this man walking distances through a city setting.

Target Audience
All - The male/s being presented appear to be in their 20's/30's due to their older fashioned clothes and haircuts. Oasis was a global phenomon in indie/rock music therefore their audience ranged from children to grown audiences.

Mode of Address
Front cover Calm yet mysterious as two characters are there and no one else. Enigma created, as we want to know who they are.
Inside front -  Mysterious and unidentifiable mood. Questions arise as to who he is and what he is doing.
(Inside back and back cover are repeated)

Representation
Front cover and inside back - The covers here identify patriarchy due to the male being centre of the frame, alone and the only gender of people in the image. Urban city's have strong structures within them in which we see in the image for example the block of flats in front of them, which could connote the strong representation of males within the media. The two males standing in the image both appear to be of an European/English background due to the colour of their skin being white. This could be a representation of the target audience, suggesting it is more suited to English indie/rock fans in their late teens to - 40's.
Back cover and inside front - Themes of patriarchy again and independence within males.

Florence And The Machine - Lungs

Album Cover - Front

Inside front

Inside back

Back cover

Image
Front cover - The centre image shows the lead singer of Florence and The Machine being Florence Welch posing in the image with her head turned away in a model like position. She is shown in the centre of the advert to draw the attention to her. As she is fastly becoming a recognized and undoubtedly an iconic face within the indie scene, the target audience will see where this advert has been placed, for example Q magazine, which is targeted at indie/rock audiences, will see this and automatically recognize her due to her taking up most of the frame. As she is not facing the audience, but turned away with her eyes clothes, we get the impression that the album has no strong sense of power due to the lack of direct engagement with the audience therefore suggesting the album is quite mellow and subtle in the indie/rock genre. Behind shows a blossomed wall of leaves and flowers which are stereotypical conventions of an indie/rock genre. Her blouse is fairly simple however it does frame the lungs behind her blouse well, which stand out in the deep red colour against her fair skin. This automatically links with the album title being Lungs therefore we gather an immediate link between the title of the album and an element within the picture so we can relate the two together. It also could suggest that as a singer, she uses her lungs to sing and breathe therefore a necessity and something very important therefore highlighting the the
Inside front - Appears to be from a concert/gig of theirs as she is holding individuals in the audiences hands which immediate connotes a personal and initiate link with their audience with the image of a physical interaction with them. The strong lighting behind her makes it appear like a show, a big show due to the strong upper lighting and how it glows above her making the light focus on her connoting her importance. The fact the audience members have cameras in her face as a prop, it connotes her inspiration upon audiences and how they see her as a star because they are taking photos of her as a memory. This is a good advertising skill as they are showing their impact on audiences.
Inside back - This is what is used behind her on the front cover. The flowers and floral pattern, and birds all connote femininity and elegance, which is represented through her music and style. This suggest the audience is more females than males.
Back cover - Shows an anatomy of lungs - automatic relation to the album title. The scientific image connotes education and knowledge which is linked to a common stereotype of indie fans being quite wealthy and well educated in terms of class within society. The solid black background adds a sense of power, which could link with the lungs as lungs are vital part of our body, for singing and breathing. Bar code and text also included.

Copy
Front cover - The name of the band is placed at the top of advert in the font which is always used. It is white which contrasts greatly against the black background connoting a varied mood to the album itself. It could suggest the songs have dark themes within them with light hearted indie/rock genre feel to the music to make them lively. The white colour connotes peace, soft moods and purity which is reinforced through the relaxed and elegant feel to the advert as a whole. The second section of text is that of the album title 'Lungs' which is displayed on her blouse - different to poster as in poster it is below blouse. This makes it much less obvious to audiences as the white text blends in almost with her blouse. However, it is cleverly placed on top of the fake lungs beneath her blouse to create an automatic relation to the object and text. It is in capitals to ensure that the importance of the album title is recognized.
Back cover - Simple text in white font to connote purity and elegance. Elegance shown throughout the rest of the digi-pack however less here due to the solid black background. The font however is fairly elegant with some in italics and a calligraphy type font. Track listing is easy to read and obvious to audiences reading. Underneath is less important information.

Genre
All - Elegance and hippy/indie fashion connotes the indie genre very much so with rustic, vintage feel being a common association with indie music and indie followers, also known as 'hipsters'. The black colour used throughout each cover represents a flow of rock music with black being a common connotation of rock music, therefore equaling the balance between indie and rock music. The femininity reflected within the images such as flowers, birds, jewellery, and Florence herself all add a sense of pop like genre to the album digi-pack as these aren't necessarily connoted with indie/rock music.

Target Audience
First 3 covers - Feminine aspects shown throughout suggest the target audience is more females than males due to props and poses used. However, males might be attracted to the front cover due to her being placed a object of beauty therefore attracting males, and females, for her to look at, which could lead on to them buying the album.
Back cover - Solid black colour and anatomy of lungs is a scientific, and solid aspect. Solid structural designs are often associated with males.

Mode of Address
First 3 covers - Relaxed, mysterious, feminine, calm, elegant, beautiful.
Back cover - Strong, powerful, intellectual, mysterious, structural, depth.

Tag line/Title/Name
Front cover - Lungs is a odd name of album, it appears to have no relevance to the music, however with her wearing lungs it suggests they are of importance to her. Lungs could be related to the importance they have in our body, as they are a vital organ of ours and she is singing about songs with what is important to hers. Her lungs are needed for her to not only breathe, but sing too.

Representation
Front cover - Femininity is strongly represented with the large image of the lead singer, Florence, and she is surrounded by pink flowers and stalks. These colours and objects are strong connotations of femininity. The only masculinity within the frame which could be represented through the instrumental players of the band, is the black border which is a connotation of the genre.
Inside front - We see her performing with her practically on top of her fans, therefore fame and wealth could be represented, but also female dominance and she is overpowering her fans below and it is rare to see such a successful female within the genre.
Inside back - The flowers, birds and flower pattern on the hanging piece as a background, all represent femininity again.
Back cover -  The back cover is very structured and dark. This is a contrast to the previous three covers as it is could be representing masculinity in contrast to femininity. This could be to highlight the other audience and the genre.

The Verve - Urban Hymns

Album Cover - Front

Back cover

Image
Front cover - Image of the band itself. The Verve are a very well known band in the indie/rock music scene therefore will be recognized by many. However, to those who wouldn't recognize the band, we can tell it is of a indie rock genre due to the band members appearance. The front cover involves an image of the band members in a rural setting, which is the opposite of where we would expect to see a indie rock band placed but, they are male dominated band. They are not posed significantly in the image, they are just resting on a grass bank looking in different directions. They are sitting closely together which connotes a close friendship between them. Their costume is a mixture of dark colours (symbolic of the genre) with lighter colours. This may connote their music has two sides, it could be quite atmospheric and with more a rock edge, or a bit lighter. They are not heavily groomed and have messy hairstyles which is another connotation of the genre.
Inside front - Again an image of the band however this time a dog is at the front and they have changed position. The group are seen smiling and having fun, with their glance being towards the dog which suggests a unity between the members of the group.
Inside back - Very simple plain black with nothing else within the frame.
Back cover - Black background with track listing and small image with bar code.

Copy
Front cover - The Verve band title in their usual recognizable font against the sky in black text  is so much easier to see and acknowledge. Placed in the upper left corner. Underneath this is the album title 'Urban Hymns' in capital letters to highlight the importance. Black font connotes power and masculinity. They are obvious in black text against the white/grey background of the sky.
Back cover - Track listing in a white font to represent purity and innocence, contradictory of the bands usual appearance as they are not seen as innocent, for example in the 'Bittersweet Symphony' music video we see the lead singer being angry and violent towards innocent passerby's in the street.

Genre
Front cover - Showing an image of the band is a dominant ideology of indie rock digi packs for singles and albums as they are creating a direct relationship with the audience as the audience can see them as they are. Bands are a huge part of indie rock music and are more common than single artists. Costume is laid back and scuffed which is a common representation of indie rockers who are male.
Inside front - The laughing and smiles they show connotes they are having fun and outgoing, which is what the target audience being teenagers are common seen doing therefore the audience can relate to the Verve album. Them together as a group is a common representation.
Back cover - Black colour is used in a lot of digi - packs to connote masculinity and independence.

Connotation
Front cover - The band are seen outside connoting a sense of freedom and outspokenness which may be shown through their songs if they sing about themes not often spoken about. Also the fact they are sitting in a close group suggests a tight knit group of socialites which is a common representation of indie/rock music listeners and followers being in fairly strong cliques. The fact they aren't looking directly at camera means less of relationship with the audience meaning they simply provide the music for the audience.
Inside front - We see the band laughing and joking around with each other and a dog in the inside front cover which reinforces the ideology that members of indie rock bands are often very close. The stereotypical view of younger adults having fun and living the 'rock and roll lifestyle' is highlighted here within the band. They are also sitting very casually which connotes their laid back fun lifestyle and how the indie rock genre is not formal.
Inside back and back cover - Black is a connotation of the indie rock genre as it is commonly used for many different things within the genre, but also is quite a masculine colour which represents the all male band.

Mode of Address
Front cover - Fun, closeness with friends, playful, freedom
Inside front - Fun and devious behavior
Inside back and back cover - Dull, plain, masculine, structured, dominance, rock and roll

Representation
Front cover and inside front -  Close and fun group. Represent males more than females with the group of males and the dog, which connotes a sense of danger and irreproachable by females.

Pete Doherty - Grace/Wastelands

Album Cover - Front

Inside front

Inside back

Back cover

Image
Front cover - Abstract image with use of bright colours which form an image of a female character in the middle. This is quite hard to notice at first glance however we see the paint creates a face, hair, hands and legs.
Inside front - Abstract lines/image created again
Inside back - Abstract image with use of bright colours which form an image of a female character in the middle however this time her details are much more obvious to the audience.
Back cover - Simple colour splashes and shapes created as a non neat frame around the text

Copy
Front cover - Simple capital font of the name Pete Doherty to address to the audience who the album belongs too without taking focus of the artistic front image which draws the most attention. The placing is of the text, centre of the top is not the most obvious of places. Underneath in lowercase font is the title of the album in non bold font.
Back cover - Casual handwriting type writing for track list in a uneven and messy looking way however still easily read just not in a straight line. Could connote music is acoustic and not so perfected as a lot of mainstream music today.

Genre
All - Artistic side to the album covers is very stereotypical of the indie genre with art being a big influence to indie listeners and contributors therefore the use of art within the digi pack is a good way of addressing the audience and the genre in one. The non perfected side of it is very indie/rock too as indie rock genre is known for not being too perfect, but edgy therefore the way the digi pack has been structured does this.

Connotation
Front cover and inside back - The female used on both of these covers, suggests it's about a previous relationship Pete Doherty has had in which he has wrote the songs about. The puzzle pieces on the inside back cover which blend into the woman torso connote their are confusing and difficult sides to this female. Puzzles are often a challenge and this could be a connotation of the female and how the male, Pete Doherty, see hers.
All - The artistic style to this suggests the band have quite an interesting way of writing music and is all quite mysterious.

Target Audience
All - The white background and use of bright colours such as reds greens and oranges all connote femininity  however the lack of neatness constructs an identity for males as its not so elegant but just thrown together in an abstract way which may appeal to males more than it would if it was a perfect painting. Making it more approachable by men and women. This continues through each side of the digi pack.

Mode of Address
Front cover - Quirky, mysterious, feminine, interesting, messy, artistic, suspicious and wild.
Inside front - Artistic
Inside back - Troubled, interesting, artistic, love, confusion, bright and creative.
Back cover - Colorful, non structured, free spirited and artistic.

Representation
Front cover and inside cover - Due to the images of the females on each side, femininity is portrayed possibly because of lyrics or theme of songs. Indie rock albums/songs to tend to have a focus on females, romance and relationships within young life therefore the representation of what the album is about is used to inform audiences and create an enigma.

The Killers - Sams Town

Album Cover - Front

Inside front

Inside back

Back cover

Image
Front cover - Side of van of trailer or house, in what appears to be a different country due to the surroundings, possibly American which is reinforced by the female pageant standing to the right of the frame. Her importance is demised here because she is not in the centre however the Killers title is which connotes their importance. This could resemble the rock genre as the themes within their music are very much sex orientated therefore seeing females as an object of beauty is a very common convention. We also see a goat lying on the floor to the right which creates an enigma as we don't see the relevance of this animal however it could connote a country type element to the indie/rock music they tend to create. The album title is called Sams Town and 'town' is often a lot more quieter, particularly in the US.
Inside front - Side of a trailer or fan in an deserted area and on the house type place is an image of an elder woman smiling. Creates an enigma as to who she is and why her image is relevant.
Inside back - Side of the goats head which creates confusion as it seems irrelevant but may just be a prop from the setting.
Back cover - Image of the band reinforcing their identity to audiences. Costumes are very typical as indie/rock genre, particularly more the indie side are commonly known to be fashionable and fashion forward therefore their suits represent their identity.

Copy
Front cover - Normal font in which is used for all of the Killers advertising and on their products therefore is familiar with audiences. Underneath is the only bit of colour used throughout the whole digi back connoting its importance as it is the albums name. Red connotes danger and as this area on the digi pack appears to be deserted, this could be the Sams Town in which is the album title which could suggest its a dangerous area.
Back cover - Plain white writing which stands out over black background, which matches the background of the above image

Genre
All - Black and white theme on each cover automatically creates an indie/rock genre with black being a very common convention of the indie rock genre. We've seen this a lot throughout the digi packs.

Connotation
Back cover - On the back cover there is the image of the band. All 3 members are looking away from the camera apart from the lead singer which connotes he has more importance within the band as the lead singer than the others, and also more of a reputation.

Target Audience
With the digi packs artistic and light album covers, they are easily approachable by many audiences. The typical audience of Pete Doherty's music is generally indie audiences who are interested in art and acoustic music and this digi pack portrays these elements well with the relaxing theme to it.

Mode of Address

Front cover - Feminine, American, mysterious, calm, deserted and odd.
Inside front - Enigma created, lonely, empty and strange
Inside back - Strange
Back cover - Structured, masculine, indie rock, dark, friendship and band

Representation
All - There is a mix of femininity and masculinity being represented here. Femininity is highlighted with the female on the front cover. This is a strange convention of their digi pack as this hasn't commonly been seen before however could connote the meanings in the song. However, because it is an indie rock band, the image of them on the back, and the colours used represent masculinity throughout the digi pack.

Magazine Advertisements

 Oasis - I'm Outta Time

Advertisement Poster - Single

Image
The background image used within the poster is a landscape setting with clouds and what appears to be a sunset or sunrise. There is no other image used within the poster apart from this which automatically creates an enigma to the audience due to the immediate confusion as to why this image is being used and what is its relevance to the song itself. The subtle and softened colours of orange, grey, red and blue connote a mellow and peaceful representation of what the song is like. The text has been placed at the top, in the middle and at the bottom of the poster in large font so it's not crowded in one place on the poster and is easily read.

Copy
The text within the advertisement immediately stands out against the background which consists of darker colours in order to focus the audiences attention on what the magazine is advertising and from whom. The name of the band being Oasis is used in their recognizable font and symbol being the square surrounding the name. Seeing as Oasis is a hugely successful band and his been for the previous decade, this recognizable title automatically draws attention from the target audience making them familiar with what the band are advertising. All the font on the advert is in white, which connotes peace, purity, innocence and softness of mood. Although indie/rock music is not usually associated with these terms, the illustration used in the background of this advertisement is very much a peaceful scene with a landscape portrayed with the sun and clouds surrounding it, therefore they are using hidden connotations within the font to relate to the image used. The font used is very easily read, particularly the name of the single which is whats being advertised used in a larger font across the middle of the advert which is positioned in the frame to capture the most attention. We notice the important information such as the name of the band, name of the song, release date and what it actually is (album or single) is all advertised in the same font, however, the format of single e.g CD is in a less noticeable font and not as bold, as this may be considered not important information.

Genre
The elements used within the advert don't particularly represent indie/rock, therefore may possibly be challenging stereotypes. However, it appears to be common for all the posters I am looking at to use an aspect of a landscape or nature and this is what this poster does too. By using the bands name and symbolic title, we recognize this is related to that of indie/rock.

Connotation
Within the advert we see a mysterious landscape image with various colours used to create a peaceful yet works well to create an enigma. For this song, a music video was created which included Liam Gallagher on a 'journey through a moon-lit English landscape'. The image used could be a representation or connotation of what the song is about and the video.

Target Audience
In a subtle way, the audience has been addressed fairly successfully within this advert however we have to look at the connotations used to address this. The font used is quite playful and messy in a sense with little solid spacing between letters and not always in a straight line. This could connote that the audience are fun, devious and young. This is a stereotypical insight of indie rock audiences as the music tends to focus on relationships, sex, drugs, youth and rock and roll which relate to the target audience of indie rock music.

Mode of Address
As explained previously, the use of peaceful colours within the image and the white used in the font creates a welcoming mood meaning audiences may be more drawn to it as it is not off putting. This is a good way of accessing the audiences attention as the aim is to draw them in and with this poster, the peaceful mood created does this.

Tag Line/Title
The title used in the advertisement is the title of the song to make it obvious to the target audience what the advert is promoting. With its place in the frame being in the center it draws the attention of the audience towards it successfully. There is no tag line used to create effect but simply necessary information regarding the single itself.

Star
There is no image of the band itself within the advertisement, however Dyer's Star Theory suggests that a star is an image not a real person that is constructed out of various materials for example advertisements and magazines. Here we see the iconic title for the band being Oasis with a box around it in a font which they have used throughout the years for everything. Here we see a constructed view that this advertisement is indeed for a band which has gained 'star status' without actually seeing the band itself. It also adds a mystery behind the poster as it is not giving too much away therefore a possibly reinforcement for this would be buy the single, and watch the music video to find out more about what the band is advertising.
Representation
It appears that there are no representations of things within the poster as it's main functioning is to promote the title of the single, in terms of class or ethnic backgrounds. However, when considering gender, the poster is quite feminine with the sultry colours used within the background image and there are no block solid colours apart from the white, suggesting that it is representing a femininity to the single itself, however Oasis attract a varied audience, a lot of which being males.

The Verve - Love Is Noise

Magazine Advertisement - Single

Image
The background image consists of the sky and clouds. It appears editing has being used to create a darker/sepia tone to the image, possibly to to stop the harshness of the sun above and to create a calmer mood to the advert. The image itself appears to divide the page up naturally with the bottom half being much darker, where white text is used, however the top half is much lighter, where black text is used. This is a clear separation between high and low key lighting.

Copy
There are two sections of text within the poster, the first being the band title and the title of the single, then secondly, the information about the single necessary for the audience. The band title, being The Verve, is in lowercase, black font, which is the same font and style of text which is used throughout all their products as a recognizable feature. We can see it much more clearly than the following information due the positioning in the frame as it is centered against a fairly light background therefore the black font contrasts this well. We gain automatic attention  towards this and also the song title 'Love is Noise'. This is in a smaller font however still in black and in the centre as this is the name of the single they are advertising therefore has to show equal importance. It appears whatever font is in black, is the most important as it's the most eye-grabbing. The information provided at the bottom of the advert is in a much smaller font in comparison to the above information. It is information describing the format of the single, the release date, where it can be brought from and the bands website for further promotion chances. This is not as noticeable however has been placed well to draw enough attention for audiences to read it well.

Genre
The advert for Love Is Noise goes against typical adverts from an indie/rock genre because of peaceful tone created by the sultry colours and relaxing image which is contradictory to the indie/rock genre, particularly more the rock genre. However, black is used which is a common colour associated with the rock genre in particular. I feel the advert follows the indie music stereotype much more than that of rock, in a way that create a more relaxed despite their music being slightly more rock than others I have looked at.

Connotation
The image in the photo shows that it has been taken above the clouds therefore not being able to see the world below but just a layer of clouds is seen. This could connote the impact of indie/rock music, such as the Verve on their target audience being mainly teenagers. We see a division between the reality and the world below, and the relaxed but separate vision of above the clouds and separate to all this. This could connote that teenagers and young adults tend to be represented as people who like their independence and are in their own element when they listen to music they like, which reinforces stereotypical representations of teenagers in that stepping stone between children and adults and a lot are also major fans of music. Another connotation is the idea that in the image, the sky is an hugely open space, like no other, and the title of the song is 'Love Is Noise'. In an open space like this, noise spreads quickly so the open space could connote the vastness of the sky and how the song may be very loud and also how rock music is often associated with loud music.
Target Audience
The poster uses dark and mysterious colours therefore this could connote that the target audience of indie/rock being teenagers and young adults, often come out at night when partying and so forth, and this is what the genre tends to represent - the behaviour of teenagers and young adults. This is a way in which the poster communicates genre into the advert. The image used could possibly give the target audience a sense of power as they are in an open space and higher than everybody else, which is often how adults perceive teenagers.

Mode of Address
The mood created is again very calm and relaxed due to the soft image however the black text contrasts this therefore a mixture of moods are created and displayed to the audience.

Tag Line/Title
No tag line has been used for effect and the only official title used is the title of the song 'Love Is Noise' which has being placed in the centre of the frame to make it more noticeable for audiences.

Star
No image of the band, The Verve, has been used within the advert therefore the audience do not  become familiar on a more personal level with the band, however a enigma is left as to what the band look like which could impact their interest to listen to the new single. Due to this, the advert is constructed with other elements to create interest for the audience.

Representation
The colours used are fairly dark, or solid colours, such as black and greys however a sultry sepia tone has also being used. Here we see a equal representation between males and females as males are being represented through the darker colours and females through the paler colours. However, there are more darker colours in comparison to lighter colours which reinforces the idea of patriarchy and also the idea that indie/rock/pop has a much large male following as well as female.

Florence And The Machine - Lungs

Magazine Advertisement - Album

Image
The centre image shows the lead singer of Florence and The Machine being Florence Welch posing in the image with her head turned away in a model like position. She is shown in the centre of the advert to draw the attention to her as in the past 2 years, Florence Welch has become a huge face in the indie/pop music scene and this was their first debut album (which topped the charts). It also could suggest that as a singer, she uses her lungs to sing and breathe therefore a necessity and something very important therefore highlighting the the importance.

Copy
The name of the band is placed at the top of advert in the font which is always used. The second section of text is that of the album title 'Lungs' which is displayed beneath the image of her on a black background in upper case. This is the title we spot the most due to the large font and borderline around it. It is the largest text on the page due to the importance of it as this is what the audience need to know. The rest of the text is still in white however in a smaller font in comparison to the title and the band name. However the release date and format of album is in capital letters and bolder/larger writing as this is relevant information for the audience, because if they are interested in buying it they need to know when they are able to and which format will suit their needs best.

Genre
The style of outfit chosen is a good representation of the indie/rock culture, particularly more indie. The indie/rock/pop genre is commonly known for being highly fashion forward, and indie genre is generally associated with vintage clothing. The advert itself has quite a vintage feel about it due to the tasseled blouse and wavy hair which could represent the genre itself. The black colour used on the background at the bottom at top of the advert connotes the rock genre with the solid colour used to represent power and its association with the indie/rock genre.

Connotation
Her elegant voice and persona, contradictory to the indie/rock genre yet still considered indie, is connoted through the flowers and elegance within the image itself.

Target Audience
The target audience for Florence And The Machine are teenagers and young adults who preference this type of music shown through

Mode of Address
The advert itself is actually an enlarged version of the album cover itself, therefore creating a more personal link with the audience as they are being reinforced in what they may buy. It creates a subtle, relaxed and elegant mood from props used and pose of Florence Welch making it a generally, more inviting advert for audiences.

Tag Line/Title
There is no tag line used within this advert just simply informative text to display the necessary information to the audience. This may be because there is already a lot going on in the advert in comparison to others i have looked at therefore tag lines and more text is not necessary as it will look too busy. The title stands out very well against the black background therefore making it more eye catching for audiences.

Star
Unlike the previous two magazine advertisements, this advert does include an image of a star (however does still include some form of scenery). The star being that of the lead singer, Florence Welch. For Dyer's Star Theory, a 'true pop star' has to have a impact on people throughout their musical career, socially and culturally. Florence Welch made her own way into the music industry without assistance from programmes such as X Factor therefore has more of a chance of representing a real 'star' character. Her elegance displayed in the image on the advert makes her appear a precious object, and one of beauty in which we should focus on. This is how she has been socially constructed, as an object of beauty and talent, therefore this attracts audiences due to her constructed image.

Representation

Jamie T - Chaka Demus

Magazine Advertisement - Single

Image
The advert contains a black and white edited image of Jamie T himself on what appears to be a stair case or rail outdoors as we can see the tree behind him, he was with another character, however Jamie T is much more closer to the camera reinforcing that he is more important than the other person in the image, therefore the audience will be more confident that he is the singer. However, including a second person in the advert image makes it more confusing for audiences as Jamie T is a one man artist. The fact he is looking down at the camera reinforces the dominant ideology of patriarchy and makes the audience see him as a superior character which is shown through his star credibility. The harsh colours of black and white created  dominant feel and strong, superior atmosphere to the advert which accompanys Jamie T looking down. The top of the advert shows a orange strip which is a bright colour to represent fun, energy and warmth. There is only limited amount of text in this advert in comparison to the others i have looked at. Jamie T, the title of the song and brief information on the format of the single it will be available to buy in is included. Jamie T's name is in the largest font and in a red colour, then the other two pieces of information gradually become smaller font and are both in black.

Copy
The first piece of text we see is the name of the artist, Jamie T, in capital letters in a deep red against the orange background. This combination of bright colours connotes joy, passion, fun, energy, power, danger, heat and so forth. These are common representations of indie/rock/pop audiences due to the energy the music has itself. Its usually very loud, fun music which provokes energy within audiences. The way his name is used could possibly suggest that Jamie T as a performer and artist is energetic and this is presented through his new single. The second piece of text we see is pictured below this in black, blocked writing however this time in lowercase. The fact it is in black makes it a much more solid image for the audience, and something they definitely notice however isn't as eye catching as his name itself. The single title has been highlighted with importance here due to the black colour to make it connote power. The final piece of text is the release date, and format of what the single will be in. This is not as bold as the previous text and in a much smaller font however we still notice it against the orange background as it makes the black text stand out much more which is probably the aim.

Genre
Indie/rock music is associated with urban lifestyle and large social 'indie rock' scenes in places such as London. In this image we see what looks like Jamie T to be standing in an urban like setting, therefore reinforcing the associations commonly made between inner city  lifestyle and indie/rock music. He also appears to be wearing a checked shirt undone at the top and a hat on.  Style, as previously mentioned, is a really strong aspect of  indie/rock scene, particularly indie music, and are quite fashion forward therefore this aspect of his clothing reinforces the genre as he his dressed as an expected indie artist would dress.
Connotation
The way the stair case or rail Jamie T is leaning on forms a near like circle could possibly connote a the spiraling lifestyle of a singer in modern day society. The single could possibly reflect these themes. Another way in which this helps is that it as it frames Jamie T in a way by forming a circle around him it draws the attention to him, as he appears almost centre, it could connote he is the powerful person in this situation as he is directly looking at the camera, therefore the audience. By this he is creating a relationship with the audience on a personal and intimate level and could possibly be seen as intimidating them into listening to the track or  even just looking at the advert in a non-negative way.

Target Audience
Their is almost no feminine like elements to this advert. The solid black and white colours, patriarchy reinforced by the way he is looking down, the bold capital letters and so forth and make this advert a very strong and dominant advert which is how males are represented, not females. The only aspect used which could create a gap for a female audience is the colours orange and red as they are not so harsh and manly. However contradictory to this, a large part of Jamie T's following are females rather than males therefore he still attracts a varied audience of males and females to his music through his adverts.

Mode of Address
The mood created is very powerful and strong due to the direct eye contact from the artist and also the various colours used. The image of the artist definitely makes a bigger impact on the advert as those who know little about him may want to know why he appears so dominant therefore listening to his music. The direct and personal mood created may be more encourage to the audience to seek out this single, however, it could also be off putting.

Tag Line/Title
There is no tag line used just simply the text spoke out before, the artists name, the EP title and the key information. This advert is very busy with its contrast in colours and shadows, images and text and so forth, therefore a tag line might make it too busy,

Star
Jamie T is a much more indie/rock singer than possibly others we have looked at, as he is much more independent, which is what indie alternatively means. He hasn't been around for long enough in the music scene to have a social and cultural impact on music, however his music is greatly liked by his audiences and fans, therefore including his image in the advert will make people become more aware of who he is, what he looks like and where to look out for him to increase his following and audience size.

Representation
We see no upper or middle class representations within this advert, however we do see a railing in what appears to be an urban background, we presume this is working class with the more laid back  teenage graphic design to the advert itself, it appears to be quite young. Also, patriarchy is highly dominant within this advert.

Kings of Leon - Come Around Sundown

Magazine Advertisement - Album

Image
The background image consists of a foggy, summers day haze with the shadow of palm tree like leaves shadowing at the top of the advert. The colours consist of oranges, reds, deep purples, yellows and creams. It appears to be a a hazed landscape. The colours used connote happiness, freedom, energy and joy which again resembles the general perception of indie/rock music and its audiences. This is resembled in a lot of the albums songs with high spirited songs being common. The tree leaves definitely identify the scene, as if they weren't there there would be much more confusion as to what it is were looking at.

Copy
The bands title is displayed at the top of advert, being Kings Of Leon in capital letters with a shadow, in a cream colour. This contrasts perfectly against the orange/red background therefore making it easy to read and noticeable. This constructs what the advert is for. The second piece of text we see is at the bottom in the same style of font and colour, the album title, Come Around Sundown. This is in much smaller font in comparison to the band title. I would believe it would be bigger than this however it is very small. The rest of the text follows in a much lighter font which isn't as obvious as the title and band name as it is not as important and relevant however demands more acknowledgement and interest to notice and read it.

Genre
This advert uses the idea of a scene or nature/landscape within their advertisement like all the previous adverts have used an element of in some form. It appears to be a common representation of the indie/rock genre which could connote the open space in which indie/rocks loud music can be heard and how their genre is separate from all others.

Connotation
The bright and relaxed colours used connote a sense of freedom and fun which is what indie/rock music appears to influence and encourage. The fazed, washed out almost rustic effect to the colours connote the appeal to vintage and influential styles and aspects from the past. The connotations of relaxation are perceived well with the use of colours and simplistic layout and image.

Mode of Address
The mood created is very calm, tranquil and relaxed due to the colours used and no harsh lines in the image just a hazed and soft image. This is contradictory to a lot of the music commonly associated with indie rock genre and Kings Of Leon itself and the album does have exceptions however a few of the songs included on the Come Around Sundown, very much fit in with his advertisement, for example 'Back Down South'.

Tag Line/Title
No tag line is used but there is a piece of text which stages 'Album out now' to help promote and encourage people to buy it as they dot have to wait for the album to come out as it's already out.

Star
There is no image the band used within this advert which is what i've seen through many of the adverts. However, this may be because Kings of Leon are such a highly successful, achieving and globally recognized bad, they don't need to directly advertise the band alongside the music, they can subsequently just advertise the music and it'll get the same reaction as if it would if they were included in it. This is because they already have that relationship with the audience without having to make them recognize the band as they already do.

Representation
The advert itself appears to be fairly unisex due to her lack of strong structural lines and colours represent male and the lack of delicate detail, however the fazed look to the advert itself gives it an overall unisex feel.
