Advertisement Poster - Planning & Drafts

As a second part of our coursework, we were asked to create an advertisement to support our music video and our digi pack, similar to the ones we analyzed while doing our research. The poster will be advertising the band and the album we are creating. The brief is to create a well structured, realistic, informative and entertaining advertisement poster which will grab the target audiences attention and sell the product.

We wanted the advertisement poster to include similar, or the same images as the digi pack so the audience could recognize the band, and the album in which is being advertised. This will create a relationship with the audience on a personal level as they are gaining direct interaction with the band. We wanted to include one image on our poster, preferable a mid shot of all four band members, looking directly at the camera. This way, it is reinforcing the relationship with the audience by looking directly at them.

We have drafted two poster ideas to see which layouts work the best;

First Draft
- this is quite different to what we had planned to do, however we wanted to trial different ideas incase we preferred them. Only two of the advertisements posters I looked at included an image of the 'star', however we feel a poster should include the bands image as indie bands are specific to a certain audience, but if we include an image, people from other audiences may be drawn to them by appearance. A black background will be included in the poster similarly to the digi pack planning as this colour is commonly recognized and used as a connotation of the indie rock genre. Advertisement posters should direct audiences to the place where they can listen, watch or purchase the song (and possibly merchandise), therefore we felt it necessary to neatly provide as much detail as possible. Here we have included the band name, the album title, the release date, the forms of media in which it will be released on 'CD, Deluxe CD, Digital', and finally the band website so audiences can gain more information. We feel that if this was more correctly placed and designed, would be very useful to include therefore is an element will we definitely use when completing the final draft.

Second Draft
- this draft is a lot more precised that the previous draft. We are really fond of the layout to this draft with the band name dominating the image so that audiences can identify the band properly. The image we feel is more suitable for an advertisement poster as the band are together in one shot, which is how male bands are often portrayed as 'close' and good friends. This works better than having individual images of them as it makes them look to separate and non band like. We again, have decided to stick to a black/grey/white colour scheme as these are very male colours and are suitable to the indie rock genre. The large and bold font for the album title and band title is an important factor as these are the things which audiences will want to refer to immediately. We will definitely be using this draft as something to work from for our final advertisement poster as we feel it works extremely well and will engage the target audience.
